Flat it pre because I’m OOP deep and my Aces are pretty crappy, really just the club draw to back them up and I’m holding one of my own clubs. If for some crazy reason I flatted pre I’d check this 100% in NLHE just because you have the deck smashed and nobody can have more than 4 outs against you. In PLO a free card is way worse and also people are much more likely to have second-best hands like AK or lower sets. You’re also less likely to induce a bluff by checking the flop since no one is going to bluff into three people in PLO. If any of them are trying to hand-read, they may not expect me to have flatted AA.
I want to know where these games are where CO or BTN is “unlikely” to bet at that :). I’d expect most players to bet there with and A and two broadways, QJT (for sure with a BDFD) or even a K with two BDFD, then there’s the c-bet from CO or the “it got checked to me” bet from BTN.
I think I’d be tempted to check from the BB here, if only because I’m checking a lot of hands here and betting out makes my hand much more obvious (but then I’m for sure betting 1/2+ pot with QJT).
After you’ve bet pot on flop, betting pot on the turn really turns your hand face up IMO (I mean you can maybe have AK, but A8 is a bluff without re-draws — or are you taking this line with QJT or something else?) Of course you can’t do anything else at this point, which sucks and is another reason I’m not going to go “fast” on the flop.
Of course I’m not sure what villan had on the turn, I’d have assumed some str8 draw with spades (maybe as weak as KJT8) … but then why did you not bet like $50 on the river?
I should probably stop ruining your plo posts with my “analysis” until I have the backroll to lose at 100plo :).
I hate to disagree with you, Andrew, because I’m a big fan of your work, but I’m inclined to think check-raising might be better here because of this line:
“…also people are much more likely to have second-best hands like AK or lower sets.”
This is true, but I think people are primarily going to bet those hands, as well as a big straight draws (as Mr. Antill mentions above), and check-raising allows you to put a lot more money in the pot on the flop, with the intention of getting the money in on the turn, which you unfortunately weren’t able to do when you took this line. You’re also holding blockers (the T and – on the turn – the 4) to straight draws as well, meaning a free card will be *slightly* less disastrous.
I also think leading the flop, betting the turn turns your hand face up, because you’re probably not going to play a big straight draw this way because you’ll probably checkraise to generate some fold equity as well. Villain should be able to fold, say, a set of 8s on the river given the way it was played, but will probably bet/call the flop and call off on the turn if you checkraise.
I like it, I also think c/r is fine too.
I kinda disagree w/ James here – yeah our hand is face up on the turn, but it really doesn’t matter because KK and AK and some QJT hands are calling anyways.
Most of the hands that continue beyond the flop that we didn’t “cooler” (AK, KK) have near pot odds to call vs AA anyways, so they’re calling. The only way it’s ‘bad’ to have our hand face up if he’s going to turn KK or AK into bluffs if we check broadway/spade rivers. W/o a read he can do that, I think its best off to just bet and build a pot.
In low stakes PLO balance really goes out the door as 90% of villains are just playing their hand.
