Cold Calling 3-Bets Out of Position

This isn’t something I do often, just because you’re basically announcing strength without charging your opponents anything, plus by spotting them position you put them in control of the betting as well. Against good players I almost always 4-bet or fold, usually fold in this spot. Against a monkey with no hand-reading, skills, though, I make exceptions:

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold’em, $10.00 BB (6 handed) – Full-Tilt Hand Converter from HandHistoryConverter.com

Button ($1097)
Hero (SB) ($1347)
BB ($1292)
UTG ($530)
MP ($2964.75)
CO ($1015)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 10, 10
UTG bets $30, MP raises to $90, 2 folds, Hero calls $85, 1 fold, UTG calls $60

Flop: ($280) 9, 10, 2 (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks, MP bets $150, Hero calls $150, 1 fold

Turn: ($580) 2 (2 players)
Hero checks, MP bets $222, Hero calls $222

River: ($1024) 4 (2 players)
Hero checks, MP bets $885, Hero calls $885 (All-In)

Total pot: $2794 | Rake: $3

Results:
Hero had 10, 10 (full house, tens over twos).
MP had Q, Q (two pair, Queens and twos).
Outcome: Hero won $2791

  1. What about his line do you not like? The river shove seems very wrong, anything otherwise.

(btw, your blog has led me to signing up for PSavvy+, worth every penny and more- thanks!)

    • villains line is okay until the river.

JJ probably isn’t calling down, and since hero’s range is basically 99-AA, he’s value-cutting himself vs pretty much all of hero’s calling range.

I’m not sure if betting the river is too thin or not to begin with, but shoving is. I’d probably want to bet $300 with QQ, but looking at it now, vs a range of 99-TT and JJ alone its a 0EV bet [assuming JJ calls], and if you ever add in combos of AA/KK, you are a dog vs his range when called.

An alternative would be to check back turn and then call a river bet. JJ will likely bet for value, and you give missed draws like AQss, KQss and QJss a chance to bluff.

  2. In my experience a cold call from the blinds is usually 99 or TT-AA and some strong broadways like AQs maybe KQs or AJs. When MP bets the flop and gets a call, SBs range is mostly pairs/sets, maybe a float with Ax. But spade draws and even KQ would probably check-raise? (maybe not with UTG still in the hand?). I think against not very good players (200 regs like myself) MP should probably check back on the turn and then either bet when checked to on the river or call a river bet (could be a bluff with Ahigh or vbet with JJ). Against good aggressive players MP should probably bet the turn and check back on the river, cause checking back on the turn and then betting the river turns his hand pretty face up and leaves him vulnerable to a c/r. Then he’s playing a guessing game and if SB has a good bluff/value ratio MP is in a really bad spot.

That’s how I see it from villain’s point of view.

    • Well said, Christoph. Stacking off with an overpair vs. my stacking-off range is not going to be good. He should be looking to play pot control/thin value, not trying his damnedest to get stacks in.
