Episode 160: Jonathan Gill

Jonathan Gill is a rising star in the online MTT world. Like TJ Jurkiewicz, he found success by tapping reserves of hard work, discipline, and perseverance that he never knew he had, and like TJ, he’s documenting his journey in a popular 2+2 thread. Our conversation covers how Jonathan discovered his passion for poker, his first industry job with Dusk Till Dawn casino, his experiences playing on a stake and receiving coaching from some of the top players on the ‘net, and his own work training the stable’s newest players. It’s an interesting look, from an entertaining guy, into the world of online stake houses (among other things).

  1. Haven’t listened to this yet…. am very excited to do so though… Jonathan is a very good friend of mine. I’ve watched him go from passionate novice to total crusher in a matter of months. His high levels of dedicated work ethic is what has brought him the success he has achieved. I’ve truly never seen anyone work as hard as him. However, his amazing poker abilities are not his best quality. That award falls to the fact he has the highest levels of integrity. Someone the cliche “he’s such a nice guy”, is truly not enough. It’s so hard to not instantly fall in love with him.

  2. Ah the Gillystar * Not only the hardest working guy in poker , but the nicest too its so amazing to see Gilly do well it was always coming , much love for this guy <3

  3. Can’t wait to listen to this. Gilly is not only ridiculously good at the game, but also level headed and a genuinely nice guy…very rare in pokerz.

  4. Love the podcast! Maybe this has been aswered before, but what is the name of the song you’re playing in the podcast? I quite like it. 🙂

  5. Very inspiring podcast. It’s so nice to hear when hard work pays off. Motivates me to study even harder. Keep these great podcasts coming.
On a side note, I know you (Andrew) and Nate like to interview those in the poker world that are not necessarily household names, and that’s one of the things I really like about this podcast. But I also think you shouldn’t be so quick to avoid the more famous players. I know that we’ve heard from these players a lot and it may feel like they’ve got nothing new to say, but I think you and Nate have become such good interviewers and have such a unique perspective that you would most likely get something from these famous players that other interviewers are simply not getting. Just a thought.

  6. @Adam

The band is called Palmyra and the strategy guest Sean Lango is/was in it – they discuss his music more in his other appearance on the show in episode 49. At that time Andrew and Nate hadn’t heard of Palmyra in Syria (the singer is of Syrian descent) but of course now everyone has 🙁

  7. I thought it was funny when Andrew asked him about being results orientated and Jonathan replied that it was the last thing on his mind. Andrew then pointed out certain blog posts which appeared to indicate the opposite was true. I could almost hear the gears turning in Jonathan’s head, as he tried to find the words to distance himself from the posts while still staying on speaking terms with his blog editor!
