Andrew goes it alone, discussing concepts from his recent Two Plus Two Magazine article and the forthcoming sequel to Play Optimal Poker. He then discusses range construction in the context of a hand where a listener 4-bets with AK and misses the flop.
Strategy
$2/$5 NLHE, 7-handed, $1400 effective stacks
UTG opens $20, LJ raises to $65, Hero raises to $150 with Ac Kc in the SB, LJ calls.
($327) 4c 9d 3h. Hero checks, Villain bets $100, Hero calls.
($527) 6c. Both check.
($527) 9s. Hero bets $350.
If you set up a toy game based on the hand in the podcast with the ranges suggested (AA,KK,AK) vs (QQ-TT), Opal can bet pot with its entire range; Ivan folds his entire range.
If you change Ivan’s range to (99-QQ), he now calls his entire continuing range. Obviously he calls all 99, but now mixes in calls with TT-QQ, preferring hands that block the back door flush. Not a blocker to Opal’s range, but a blocker to Opal completing her flush.
Great episode, one of my favourites. If you’re ever thinking of issuing more premium podcasts a series on how to play optimal poker would be a great choice, and I would definitely buy them!
