Episode 257: Gareth Chantler on Canada’s Missing Syrians

Thinking poker legend Gareth Chantler recently published a major exposé of flaws in Canada’s refugee approval process. He discusses the piece, which was the product of years of research, as well as his work more generally with the Syrian community in Turkey. Gareth is also raising money to bring one Syrian family in particular to Canada, and donations are more than welcome.

  1. Re: Kelly criterion for tournaments with multiple possible payouts. I did a thread on this in 2015 on 2 plus 2 in the MTTSNG subforum
    https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/198/mttsng/kelly-criterion-mttsngs-1553950/

The results were that with a 10% ROI for the payouts and rake* at the time on Pokerstars you would ideally want to invest
1/20 of your BR for 9 man,
1/37 of your BR for 18 man,
1/69 of your BR for 45 man,
1/234 of your BR for 180 man,
1/690 of your BR for a particular 1362 player MTT that was running that day.

    * Somewhat counterintuitively, for a fixed ROI, with higher rake you need a slightly lower bankroll – consider the case of an HUSNG where the rake was 45% of the total buyin, and your ROI was 10% – in that scenario you win every time and don’t need a BR because you don’t have downswings. With more realistic rakes the effect isn’t massive though but it will affect the results if people try to reproduce the above.
