Episode 159: SuperDave

Love him or hate him, SuperDave is undoubtedly a legend at Foxwoods. With admirable candor, the high-limit stud player talks to us about his background, his code, his prop bets, his unique table presence, the difficulties he’s faced, and the challenges he’s still struggling with today.

  1. Wow, what a mess this podcast was this week. However, I mean “mess” in its kindest sense, because the podcast was entertaining! It was also an worthwhile glimpse into the live poker world. On the other hand, the conversation was disjointed and a bit jarring, and the sound quality was bad. Yet overall, thumbs up.

    • Thanks, glad you enjoyed it despite the flaws. We generally avoid doing cell phone interviews, but it was our only option for SuperDave, and we decided it was worth it. After listening to the show, he apologized for both the sound quality and the disjointed conversation. If we talk to him again, I think there will be improvements. Thanks for sticking with it!

  2. Nice job , you three guys gave the audience a strong image of the poker/gambling world. I felt Super Dave was “Spot On” with a lot of his comments regarding the treatment of poker players(the customer), the lifestyle, relationships, and the hard life it can be for someone who wants play poker on a regular basis. While last weeks episode displayed the happy recreational side of the game(which I though was great), this weeks episode gave me the image of a sadder, more complex side of a game I love so much.

Thanks again on job well done!!!

  3. Really enjoying these recent episodes of the podcast bringing on guests that are a lot more relatable to most of us listeners like TJ and John- their stories seem like something the average person could really emulate and do versus the backgrounds of a lot of the more seasoned and well-known pros. And then of course this episode with SuperDave personally gave me a big window into the mind of a live mid-stakes non-pro reg. I just caught up on the last few episodes on a long drive today and I feel like this episode will make me be a lot more thoughtful about how I interact with similar players at my local card room in terms of just general conversation as well as poker strategy.

  4. I found his comments on addiction really really interesting. First is that there is that the prevailing common wisdom is that if you’re an addict is that you must never partake in whatever you’re addicted to, you must go to meeting, counseling, ect. But there are a lot of smart people that make a very good case that for most people who fit the medical definition of an addict moderation might be a more effective tool than complete abstinence. He never explicitly stated an opinion on the matter I find his story interesting in that aspect regardless.

The second one relates to his ketogenic diet. I remember reading a theory about how sugar and alcohol addictions and binge eating are closely related. I don’t pretend to understand most of it but the theory goes something like they depend on the same mechanisms like inability to process sugars and other refined carbs and insulin imbalance. I don’t know if there have been any studies that examine this but there are a lot of anecdotal stories out there that once they go on a ketogenic diet they don’t get alcohol cravings the same way.
