Alex “Assassinato” Fitzgerald and “The” Carlos Welch join Nate and Andrew in a room at the Gold Coast to talk about Las Vegas, getting better at poker, creativity, poetry, pre-flop raise sizing, and more. Don’t miss this rare treat, with two hosts and two guests all in the same place at the same time! We only get a few chances a year to do shows like this, and they are always a ton of fun.
The books mentioned on the show are Poetic Meter & Poetic Form, How to Rap, and Decoded. Alex contributed a chapter to Excelling at No-Limit Hold ‘Em.
That was fun – too bad you can only do it once a year.
Fun episode. The stuff on the historical precedents for battle rap was very interesting. When I was a kid I was fascinated to find that nomadic medieval poets in Ireland supported themselves on the hospitality of hosts who either hoped to be the beneficiary of a praise poem, or at least to avoid a slam poem (a so called “glam dicin”) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_poetry#Medieval.2FEarly_modern
This is my favorite Wikipedia link of the month so far. Thanks for this!
Yeah that’s pretty cool!
This wikipedia is incredible, thank you

This is a #nitcast dream. All I have to do is rap nice things about people and I get free food? Well you definitely do not deserve a glam dicin, so here you go…
Oh Dara O’Kearney and the Irish guys
Thanks for all the dinners at TGI’s
Twas fun to rail the tourney
On your final table journey
One day I hope to run like you and not end up on a gurney
Andy Black was awesome, but you both are stars
You get more mileage out of a pair of shoes than I do out of used cars.
I loved the stuff on poker player psychology and the evolution of styles, although it was a bit fuzzy at times whether you were talking about winning players/really successful winning players/just one type of winning player, When I thought about it, I decided that there were certain sub-parts of the poker world that you had to have unreasonable levels of overconfidence to inhabit, given the level of variance overwhelming any edge you might have. But who’s to say what is delusional overconfidence and what is just risk loving behaviour, especially if you’re young and have no real ties.
OK..is he NOT Jesse Pinkman?
I’m a week behind on my listening so only just catching up with this, and it’s a great episode.
“I’ve never met a European with a favourite hand” – brilliant.
