Episode 88: Andrew vs Nate

On Episode #88 of the Thinking Poker Podcast Andrew Brokos andNate Meyvis break down two hands that were submitted from the audience. One is a cash game hand from an underground joint in New York with a favorable preflop rake, and the other comes from a tournament.

Nate and Andrew also discuss a hand they played against one another at Red Rock after they both busted the World Series of Poker Main Event.

  1. Loved the Nate vs Andrew segment – you guys should play more against each other just for the podcast material.

What happened on the last hand? Did he fold or call the shove?

  2. I think the royal flush bonuses at Red Rock should affect how you play your hands (at least against locals) because it severely affects people’s ability to fold suited broadway preflop. I know people don’t like to fold suited broadway in general, but they’re on a whole other level.

  3. Stopped part-way through when Nate mentioned the televised NL deuce. Had to see if the episode was online. It was 2004. Here’s part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz37E3d8waI

That video does contain the table talk Nate mentions (start at 5:45). Here’s my shot at a hand-history: Chau Giang has about 140k (prob making him 2nd in chips) and opens to 40k utg 7-handed at 3k-6k-1k with J9752. Howard Lederer wakes up in the BB with the monstrous 87653 and rips it for 120k (prob 3rd in chips) or so total. Chau admits to live misclicking (he meant to open to 20k, not 40k, folds. Someone off-camera (pretty sure it’s Steve Zolotow) says something to the effect of “the worst part is it looks so suspicious he’s going to think you’re on a steal.”

Watching this clip as a jaded poker pro makes me think that the talk was less a serious strategy discussion and more a sarcastic needle. I’m no 2-7 expert, but seems like a good spot to just raise small with your entire range? Also, huge lol @ noted nit liar Howard Lederer acting incredulous that Chau put him on a massive hand. Yeah ok bud nobody believes you’re slamming it in there with just an 8 draw vs one of the two people who covers you with 3 shorties at the table.

BTW, one the subsequent parts of this video will undoubtedly contain that classic clip of Chau rubbing his nipples and saying “i love play pokah, pokah nice.”

Also, thanks for making my ears burn 🙂

    • Those clips were great, although for some reason part 3 is just a replay of part two (and I think part 3 is where Chau does his little dance). I don’t think Chau mis-clicked – he has a look where he’s thinking about what to raise and then he puts out 8 chips in two 4 chip amounts – how could 8 chips be mistaken for 20K?

That old youtube account has a massive amount of videos and some old world series main event ones I’ll probably watch at some point.

  4. Started watching part 2…wonder if Zolotow’s bust-out hand is a massive icm punt? Why not open tiny instead of 4x+ when the guy in the BB is the one guy who covers you? Should he be breaking a T7 there?

  5. BTW regarding that other strategy segment hand; underground New York club, huge overbet, rivering nines full of aces in a spot where it’s very unlikely villain has a better hand, but might have a hand good enough to pay off – was no one else thinking what I was thinking? I half-way expected Andrew to say “and the email further states ‘I want him to think that I am pondering a call, but all I’m really thinking about is Vegas and the fucking Mirage'”.

    • Another quote from that scene applicable to this particle podcast episode: “I just got top two pair on the flop and I want to keep him in the hand. Against your average guy I’d set a bear trap, hardly bet at all – let him walk into it. But KGB’s too smart for that. So what I got to do is overbet the pot; make it look I’m trying to buy it. Then he plays back at me and I get paid off.”

  6. Thanks for discussing my hand!

I’ve never seen Rounders before, but that connection between that scene and my hand made me smile. I even attended the same high school as Matt Damon–I guess I’m living out my destiny.
