Nate and Andrew discuss strategies for the World Series of Poker that will assist you both on and off of the felt, and they also break down a hand from Nitcast favorite Gareth Chantler and another from the PokerStars Sunday Million.
This is the final episode of the Thinking Poker Podcast that will appear on this feed. I’ll continue to post announcements of new episodes here, but the only place to hear the show will be on the PokerNews/iBus Media podcast feed. If you haven’t already, please bookmark http://www.pokernews.com/podcast/ or subscribe to the PokerNews feed to ensure you won’t miss future episodes of the show. Thanks!
Lol @ Bernaaard Lee and his rungood Nike underpants.
Am I the only one who’s disappointed to have bloody Palmyra back?
Apart from that, I enjoyed the strategy discussion.
Apologies for being grumpy. I’m halfway through a pile of 260 terrible exam scripts.
Stacks of exams at this time of year is one thing I certainly don’t miss about academia.
Glad you liked the strategy discussion! I can’t see your name without feeling a bit of guilt that I don’t have anything insightful to say about your multiplayer [0, 1] work.
What multiplayer [0, 1] work?
Ah, I’m actually not sure about the details, but I meant John’s work on multiplayer games he references in the E79 comment thread. Sorry!

This is fascinating, thank you! I don’t have anything insightful to add, but I’m sure there are some things we can learn from this analysis about real poker.
FWIW, I also found your article fascinating, John.
But I like Palmyra more! 😉
Come on boys. That Starbucks is right across the Rio Spa where you can get your facials and pedicures for as much as a Deep Stack Buy In!!!!
I’m already nostalgic for the Carlos Welch and Clayton Fletcher style TPE pitches.
The only thing I personally object to is a choice of your day for the meet. Saturday is the most expensive day in terms of hotel rates. For someone like myself who is coming in just for the meet and some side tournaments it would be best to do it on a weekday when the hotel rates are cheaper. Nit, Nit, Nit, and more nit. I just feel ridiculous paying $200 a nite to a hotel that charges $65 on a slower nite. Anyway think about it. My sched is not set yet anyway.
Keone–thanks for giving your input.
I think you are an exception given your line of work, but I’d guess that for most of our listeners, a weekday trip would be more expensive once we account for the opportunity cost of not working / taking a vacation day.
A more basic issue, I think, is that I didn’t really think people would make a trip for the meetup–it’s quite flattering to hear that some people might be doing this! Again, this started as a “I’ll get coffee with Andrew, and if a couple listeners say hello that’s a bonus” event.
Thanks very much for calling my attention to something that I’ll admit wasn’t on my mind.
Yes there are a number of reasons why this is not a nitcast-approved time/place. I suppose we’re really aiming for convenience over cost, to be honest. As Nate said, I’m flattered to think that this might play a role in your travel plans. I’m also glad, as hearing about your adventures with the Atlanta crew makes me sad that I’m not out there with you. If it’s any consolation, I’d be glad to buy you lunch after the meet-up, though really I owe you a lunch anyway!
Thanks guys! Well if youre going to be an OLD SCHOOL NIT its always “Its about me!”. Youre right people work and as well as they should. How else does this world get things done? Not by slackers like moi. If the family lets me go Ill see you there.
After taking Nate’s advice on both the Gold Coast hotel and the Noodle Exchange inside, I nominate something over there for the meetup. I say this without any liability for folks crossing the street, as I likely won’t be able to be there. What about the bowling alley upstairs there?
The field for the $3000 PLO8 might be a bit tougher than Nate expects. This year’s 4pm WSOP events will run until 3am; the number of casual/recreational players in these events is limited. I’m skipping all of the 4pm events as I’d just be lighting money on fire given my work schedule.
That’s interesting. I agree that many recreational players will be deterred by the 3a end times. I suspect that these are many of the same players who are already deterred from $3K PLO8 events in a year when there are many non-HE options for $1.5K. But you could certainly be right that the set of deterrents here is stronger than I realize.
Thanks for the note! And sorry to hear that you have to skip a favorite game of yours…
