One of my students sent me a fun little brag hand and gave me permission to share it here. I should say that he’s relatively new to poker but seems preternaturally talented at reading people’s physical behavior. As you’ll see, he references it often here, and it’s not something we’ve worked on together:
“I had 7-8 off at 5-5, i’m cutoff, 1 limp, i raise to 30 $. Before raising, i see the button grabbing his chips like he wanted to initially raise, that gavé me info on the strength of his hand.
Flop comes 10 9 8 rainbow… i bet 45 $ into 60 $ … He snap calls and he throws his chips like hes trying to scare me.
Turn K of clubs that brings à flush draw… i bet 95 $ , he takes his time but still calls and again triés to scare me by how he threw his chips. Red flags of weakness
River 3 blank, i check… he doesnt really take his time and bets 225 $ into à 340 $ pot
I think for 5 minutes.. i know deep down i’m good .. I think to myself that if he had 2 pairs, or KJ or QJ he would of raise the turn and if he only had A10 he would have checked back the river and since my second barrel represents strongest as i’m the initial raiser and my image is tight, he cant have none of that
I know the only thing I can beat is à bluff but i had to follow my gut. I was sure he had AJ.
I called and BOOM he shows me AJ… When the table saw what i called him with (4th pair) they couldnt believe it lollll”
Nice job and great read. It’s cases like these, with specific reads of course, I like to check call the river to give people a chance to bluff. It’s not always this “simple” per se, but sometimes the lines they take make no sense at all.
hmmm, I know I am the nit when I think about ISO raising 87o in CO and when I glance over and see BTN getting ready to raise— I just fold 🙂
nice hand
which
I had the same thought. If I have 87o and someone in position wants to raise, I’m out.
Would be much better ending if villain was bluffing with A8 😉
