This was the second rush tournament I’ve played, and while I miss having reads and establishing dynamics at the table, I will say that rush otherwise allows for great tournament structures. You get in a ton of hands at each blind level and the tournament still goes by pretty quickly. Especially for non-NLHE games, where reads aren’t worth nearly as much to me, I think I’m a big fan. Anyhow, here are a few random hands:
Slowplay Costs Me the Pot
It’s really rare that slowplaying is correct in PLO8, and despite the results of this hand, I’m pretty happy with my decision. On the flop, it’s just really hard for him to have anything at all and so easy for me to have trips. When I’m ahead, I’m usually way ahead, sweating two or in this case just one out. Turn is great for me since it means there will be no low; I probably would have bet a rag. I don’t think I can expect too many calls if I bet the river, and most of the hands will value bet if I check anyway, so I’d rather try to induce. Or, in this case, save myself some money.

It’s a cardinal rule of split pot games that you aren’t supposed to call down for half the pot, especially not with only the second nuts. I just don’t see the guy ever checking the nut low on the flop. The real danger here is that I get quartered if he has A3 and a high, but even that’s a kind of unlikely flop check, plus I hold two of the 3’s. He was pissed though.
Bluff Catching
Looking at this now, I probably ought to bet the turn. As played, though, I’m happy with the river check-call. It’s extremely rare that he has a high good enough to value bet in its own right, so I think the only way I get scooped is if he rivered like a low and a weak two-pair, and that seems pretty unlikely. I also don’t think he checks too many low draws on the turn that are good enough to value bet the river. Scooooooooooooop.

I finished 32nd out of like 1100 runners. That took barely three hours to play out, despite the fact that there was plenty of play at every level. Rush PLO8 tournament = great success!
