These took the place of the usual $200 and $500 tournaments on UB yesterday. I never got off the ground in the first one, just lost a ton of medium-sized pots, then the blinds got big and one of my shoves got snapped off.
In the $500, I doubled up real early on raising 77 from early position and betting an QJ7 flop into the only caller. He called again, and the turn brought an A. My immediate thought was “god he had KT he just turned a straight.” I bet and he min-raised. I contemplated just calling and hoping for a pair on the river. That’s how bad I’ve been running. Anyway I came to my senses and shoved, and he snap-called KQ. Somehow I dodged the gutshot and doubled up to 500 BB’s right out of the gate.
After that I got ground down for a while and ended up raising about 20% of my stack with AQ from MP1 at a 10-handed table. The SB, who had me covered, moved all in. It was a pretty gross spot, but I elected to call. He had KK, but I hit trip Aces on the flop. The following dialogue ensued:
Him: Ugh every time. Nice hand.
Me: Thank you.
Him: Can I ask you a question?
Me: I have a feeling you’re about to be a dick, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Shoot.
Him: Dick? I just wanted to know what you put me on.
Me: I knew it.
Him: How is that being a dick? I just want to know how you can call all your chips with AQ.
Me: We’re done.
Him: Yeah, we both know the answer.
Me: Tell you what, I’ll make it up to you. Let’s go play heads up, and you can take the $500 and then some from me.
Him: I’m at Table MacCarrell.
So we played 5/10 heads up for like an hour and I ended up taking $500 from him. He was awful but ran pretty well, including making trips against my top pair top kicker and top two against my Aces.
Anyway I eventually lost a coin flip to bust from the tournament, but at least I made my entry fee back on the heads up challenge.
Overall it was a super long and frustrating poker weekend, and I’ve got an important meeting tomorrow morning, so I’m taking the night off and not playing UBOC Event 6. It’s just a $200 anyway, with a 90K guarantee.
